A NON-PROFIT SOFTWARE & AI ACADEMY — SOUTH AFRICA

We build
Africa's tech-literate future.

No coding background? No problem. We train South Africa’s next generation of software and AI developers — and put them to work solving real problems for whoever needs them, before they even graduate.

Sakha. Funda. Qhuba. — Build. Learn. Move forward.
Why we exist

BuildAfreeka_ — Talent is everywhere. Opportunity isn't.

South Africa has a tech-skills shortage and a youth unemployment crisis — happening at the same time, to the same people. We close that gap head-on: select on aptitude, train hard, and place graduates into real careers.

Here’s the twist: our students don’t just practice on toy projects. They ship real, mentor-reviewed software and AI tools for whoever needs them — big or small, formal or informal, before they even graduate.

The programme

BuildAfreeka_ — One path, four stages, real careers.

Every student moves through the same sequence — from selection to a real career, with a live client portfolio to show for it.

01 — RECRUIT

Find the aptitude

Reasoning and problem-solving assessments, not prior coding experience or formal qualifications, decide who gets in.

02 — TRAIN

Build the fundamentals

Programming, data structures, systems design and applied AI/ML, taught through real project briefs from day one.

03 — BUILD

Ship for real clients

Supervised student squads deliver working software and AI tools to municipalities, schools and small businesses.

04 — PLACE

Launch the career

Graduates leave with an accredited qualification, a live delivery portfolio, and support into permanent roles.

The build studio

BuildAfreeka_ — Real clients. Real code. Real stakes.

We build for anyone with a real problem — no client is too small or too informal for us to take seriously. Every project runs under a senior mentor's sign-off before it reaches you, and fees scale to what you can pay: bigger, formal organisations pay closer to market rate, which funds free or nominal-cost delivery for everyone else.

Municipalities

Public service delivery

  • Service-request triage and routing tools
  • Billing and query portals
  • Internal case-management systems
Schools

Admin & access

  • Enrolment and timetable systems
  • Parent-facing query and FAQ tools
  • Low-connectivity, low-device solutions
Small business — formal & informal

Everyday operations

  • WhatsApp-based stock and order tracking
  • Simple bookkeeping and invoicing tools
  • Customer-facing support agents

These are just the projects we've seen most often — not a limit. If it's a real problem worth solving, we want to hear about it, whoever you are.

New for this cohort

BuildAfreeka_ — From prompt to production: the AI & Agents track.

Layered on top of core software fundamentals — students don't skip the basics to get here.

PHASE 1

Applied AI & LLM foundations

Prompting, structured outputs, calling LLM APIs, retrieval-augmented generation, and enough classical ML to be conversant.

PHASE 2

Agent building

The reason-act-observe loop, tool and function calling, the Model Context Protocol (MCP), memory, and multi-agent patterns.

PHASE 3

Evaluation, safety & production

Testing agent accuracy, guardrails for high-stakes actions, human-in-the-loop approval, cost control, and deployment.

PHASE 4

Applied in the Build Studio

Agent-powered service-request triage, admin assistants and small-business tools — shipped to real clients, mentor-reviewed.
